Austin NOW demands reconsideration by the Texas Supreme Court and Texas State Legislators regarding Senate Bill 8 Austin, Texas – (September 10, 2021) SB 8 went into effect in Texas on September 1, 2021 that bans abortion just six weeks into a pregnancy. There are no exceptions in cases of rape or incest, and by the time someone finds out they are pregnant it’ll likely be too late. Politicians in Texas are denying vital healthcare in the name of policing women’s bodies. Abortion providers in Texas and the ACLU filed an emergency application to block this law, but so far they have heard only silence from the Supreme Court. “NOW has been at the forefront of the fight to protect Roe since its inception, and that fight has entered a new era today”, says Christian Nunes, President of National Organization for Women. Austin National Organization for Women will sound the alarm and fight to protect safe and legal abortion care. This law effectively overturns Roe v. Wade for people in Texas and we know it won’t stop there. If this is not overturned, similar laws could be enacted in states across the country, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities.
Austin NOW and Georgia NOW, along with other organizations will be hosting a rally on September 18, 2021 at the steps of the Austin Capital located at 1100 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701. The time for the peaceful rally is 11:00 am – 1:00pm We are bringing attention to the unjustly passing of SB8; that’s going to vastly affect low income individuals, especially women of color regarding abortion health.
